'Dancing With The Stars' 2012 Week 6 Recap -- Motown Madness, Viagra And Katherine Jenkins Alone On Top.

"Dancing with the Stars" 2012 resumed April 23 with Motown Night, an evening featuring routines performed to tunes offered up by none other than Smokey Robinson, The Temptations and Martha Reeves of Martha and the Vandellas. Who soared and who slumped? Read on.The slate of legendary performers kicked off the two-hour spectacle with mini-samplings of their respective vocal stylings. And then co-hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke welcomed the couples to the ballroom. Yawn. Let's see. Peta Murgatroyd looks like a mermaid. No, really, like a blonde-haired Ariel. And Melissa Gilbert, whoa there, that's some serious green. Someone buy her a shamrock.And then quite appropriately, Motown legend Gladys Knight started off the night's performances with her dance alongside partner Tristan MacManus. Tristan called dancing with Gladys "surreal" as they prepped their "My Girl" Rumba. Gladys hoped to make everyone proud with her performance, but acknowledged that it was "a tall order".It was admittedly hard to pay attention to the dancing with The Temptations themselves singing, but hey, I did my best. Gladys had a bright smile and she's always elegant, but there was something clunky about the dance. Maybe it was the music. I can't imagine Rumba'ing to something as powerful as "My Girl". (Unless maybe Tristan is involved. That may change things. Yum.)Len Goodman said she'd be tops if he could judge "purely with my heart", and called her "the most charismatic dancer". He said "it's just easy like Sunday morning". Bruno Tonioli praised her "star quality" but wished it could've been "a bit more Beyonce" and "not forgetting the end would help." Carrie Ann Inaba said "tonight is gonna belong to you" but pointed out "forgetful moments". She told Brooke that sharing the stage with her old friends was "amazing" before claiming "I've got the best partner in the world" in Tristan. Aw.Gladys Knight and Tristan MacManus' week 6 scores: 7, 7, 7 = 21.Up second to perform was the strangely accident prone TV host Maria Menounos and her partner Derek Hough. While prepping for their Foxtrot, Derek stressed "pure class and pure quality". Maria noted that their recent successes have raised the bar, and she wants to meet the expectations. She called the Foxtrot "a challenge for me", but promised to get 'er done.Martha Reeves took to the stage to sing "Jimmy Mack", and a few bars in, Maria and Derek hit the floor. Maria has really nice shoulders and carriage when she dances, but she stumbled on the stairs in the middle of the routine and it seemed to take her off her game for a few eight-counts. Bummerino. But she finished well, and her swirly, glittery skirt totally entranced me when she spun. I want a skirt like that. Bruno called it "a gleaming blend of sophistocation". He noted her gaffe but loved her movement. Carrie Ann also noted the slip-up and called Maria out for letting her shoulders rise during the second half of the dance, but called it "excellent" overall. Len called it "a joy to my eyes" and also loved the live music.(Between dances, a bunch of white guys called Human Nature performed old classics. I should note that now before I forget. Okay. Done.)Maria Menounos and Derek Hough's week 6 scores: 8, 9, 9 = 26.Disney kiddo Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower kept the action moving forward with their Rumba. When Chelsie asked Roshon what "sensual" meant to him, he said "huggy". Ugh, yeah, this could be awkward. To her credit, Chelsie said she was "determined" to pull the man out of him. Uh, okay. Hopefully the "dedication of Roshon" will, uhm, not make it a total disaster. Or something.Smokey Robinson returned to the ballroom to croon the pair's song, "Cruisin'". They set a nice mood, I guess, but Roshon was way too angular for the sexy Rumba. He's a good dancer, sure, but this just isn't his style.Carrie Ann said she found his movements "a bit too overexaggerated tonight" and then called in a report by the Lift Police. (There was booing.) Len called the movements "clipped and jerky" and likened it to "painting by numbers". (Chelsie was uncharacteristically defensive.) Bruno assured him "what you lack in size you make up in power" (say what?) but agreed that he needs to chuck the hiphop motions during a Rumba.Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower's week 6 scores: 7, 8, 8 = 23.Up next to face the music were ostensible "DWTS" frontrunners Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas. During rehearsals, Katherine noted that the Samba is full of bouncing and hips, and Mark stressed that it was important that she "get hold of the bounce" and have "really strong technique". By rehearsal's end, she finally felt ready to roll. But was she?The Temptations provided the music for the duo's Samba in the form of "I Can't Get Next to You". Katherine was solid gold in sold fringe with a truly impressive beehive atop her head. Mark channeled Gavin DeGraw in a fedora. She could star in the next "Austin Powers" movie. It was good. Bouncy. Loose. Groovin'.Len declared that he was going to call her "the midwife" because she "keeps delivering week after week". Bruno declared "baby, baby you can bounce and you can funk!" and "the marriage of Brazil with Funkytown has never been more exhiliarating". Carrie Ann called it "amazing".Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas' week 6 scores: 10, 9, 10 = 29.NFL star Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd kept thing smoving with their individual dance. Donald was pumped about seeing The Temptations play live, and said that Motown takes him back to his childhood with his mom playing the music on the radio. Aw. To help Donald master his frame, Peta brought in a cardboard cut-out of Crankypants for some inspiration. Donald vowed to use "perfect" technique during his Foxtrot to capture a 10 from Len."The Way You Do the Things You Do" served as the musical background for Donald and Peta's very blue dance. (Really, more blue than I've ever seen in the ballroom. It was nuts. It made me think of Grover from "Sesame Street".) Donald did Packer Nation proud, even if there was a little stumble and he was a little pancake-handed at times. Good energy, enthusiasm and restraint.Bruno praised Donald as "a showman" and worried that Peta would "end up in the orchestra pit". He told him that he should be "in the theater". Carrie Ann praised his transitions. Len declared "you came out and exploded on this floor" and pushed Peta to "work on him" because "this guy can be a great dancer". Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd's week 6 scores: 9, 9, 9 = 27.(So the "I need a ten from Len" quest continues.)Following Mr. "I Must Have a Ten from Len" were actress Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy. In rehearsals, Melissa vowed to make her "Viennese Waltz as beautiful as possible", but she struggled with taking Maks' comments and translating them into actual movement. And Maks got frustrated with her. Often. As they fought, Maks joked "it could be worse... you could have an ugly partner". Meh. In the end, she said she would just "have to relax and dance".Smokey Robinson sang "Ooo Baby Baby" and Melissa and Maks danced. They opened with a lovely spin. Melissa really need sto work on keeping her shoulders down, but she had some really nice movements, didn't look as frenetic and panicked as usual, and all in all turned in a very competition-worthy routine.Carrie Ann praised Melissa's hard work, telling her "I see artistry blossoming in you" but cautioned her against her shoulder placement. Len enjoyed the "lyrical" quality of the dance but noted a lack of steam at the end. Bruno appreciated some of her "extended lines" as wonderful, and told her as was "going in the right direction, well done".Before the scores were given, both Melissa and Maks criticized the pre-dance rehearsal segment as overwhelmingly negative and not characteristic of their actual week. Hmm, shocking!Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy's week 6 scores: 8, 8, 8 = 24.Six down, two to go, and taking the torch next were Jaleel White and Kym Johnson. Jaleel called being in the bottom two last week "demoralizing" and got to work on the Cha Cha. Kym worked to help him return to his week one form, but Jaleel admitted to feeling "a lot of stress".The Temptations were up yet again when Jaleel and Kym hit the ballroom, this time crooning "Ain't Too Proud to Beg". Jaleel looked like he'd unlocked his personal George Jefferson once again as he strutted around the ballroom, but you know something? It worked. It was good! On point, fun, furious. Len declared "you're back". Bruno called it "the biggest sizzler of the season" and said "you've come back big time". Carrie Ann said "consider the A-game brought to the table". Succinct, they are!Jaleel White and Kym Johnson's week 6 scores: 10, 9, 10 = 29.Wow. It was good, but wow. The judges are so generous at the end of the evening.The individual dances came to a close with Carrie Ann's "Latin dancing James Bond" William Levy and Cheryl Burke. Cheryl stressed that she wanted their Rumba to be the hottest dance ever, and said it was important that William "slow it down" and be really sensual. And then their rehearsal ignited the studio. Yeah, er, okay. Weird.Smokey Robinson returned to the ballroom once again to sing for the pair, this time doing a rendition of "Being with You". There was plenty of bump 'n grind and William struck some nice poses, but it seemed like Cheryl did most of the actual dancing. Hmm.Bruno rose to his feet and called it "absolute and utter filth". And of course, "I loved every minute of it". He went on to tell them "you two are wired for sex". Awkward. Carrie Ann thanked them "on behalf of all of the women out there", but noted that it wasn't his best dance. Len said he could understand the audience's reaction, but called the dance "a little bit on the raunchy side". He said "it was all right" and then Bruno very awkwardly interjected that Len "needs Viagra". Whoops.William Levy and Cheryl Burke's week 6 scores: 9, 8, 10 = 27.With the individual dance round over, it was time for more Motown and of course, the Motown Marathon featuring all eight couples. But first, "DWTS" pros Anna Trebunkskaya and Val Chmerkovskiy danced a seriously happenin' number to a Smokey Robinson tune.And then... Cha Cha Cha time! I'll spare you the exact details and give the order of elimination plus points awarded: Gladys and Tristan (3 points), Maria and Derek (4), Roshon and Chelsie (5), Melissa and Maks (6), Donald and Peta (7), Jaleel and Kym (8), William and Cheryl (9) and winners Katherine and Mark (10). Len praised Mark and Katherine because they "really worked it".So who gets the boot tomorrow night? I have no idea. I'd guess Gladys, but it'd be brutal for the Empress of Soul to be booted during Motown Week, duh. Who else might fly under the radar and fail to get votes? Could be bad news for Roshon and Chelsie.
